What's an Ebook Anyway?
From books to websites to Kindle to the iPad, what in the world is an ebook? Afer all
isn't "Kindle" something you use in your fireplace to keep the fire burning? (Well, that's
actually kindling, but very close.)
Welcome to ebooks. Ebook readers are definitely making a place in our culture. And
while you may prefer to curl up on the sofa with a good book, it doesn't mean you can't
take advantage of the ebook revolution to increase your business.
No we're not talking about getting an electronic copy of Tom Sawyer and selling it on
your website, but rather taking advantage of the technology to further your business.
Huh? Let us explain.
At the core, an ebook is nothing more than content in an electronic format that can
oftentimes be downloaded into an ebook reader, put on a computer, or even now a
mobile phone. Ebooks are great because they are convenient and portalble, and since
an electronic device can store hundreds of ebooks, you can save space on your
bookshelf. (Well, we still have many regular books on our shelves and would be in
trouble if we had to carry them with us!)
So what does this mean for you? Ebooks are a terrific way to explain processes, or
to provide additional information for your customers. For example, if you're a dentist,
you could provide a guide about caring for your teeth, as well as educate your patients
on what certain dental procedures can do for them. Since you would be explaining
more information than what would be feasible on a Web page or even in a brochure,
you would have an ebook produced that's uploaded to your website that patients could
download and read at their leisure. Perhaps you're an OB-GYN practice, and you want
to provide additional information to women who are becoming mothers for the first time.
You could have an ebook created along with illustrations and photos that a new mommy
could download from your website. And since new moms are busy people, they can
view this information on their laptops, netbooks or mobile phones.
How do you create an ebook? We can help with that, but keep in mind that it doesn't
have to put you in the red. For example, a PDF, which is a common file format that
people use, is a type of ebook format. There are many other formats as well. This means
that even a Word document can become an ebook. Yes, you can have all the bells
and whistles of page turning ebooks, but a simple PDF might work fine.
Now more than ever, customers want information as well as service. They want to
trust whom they do business with and have peace of mind. By offering an ebook as
an added bonus to your website, you are sure to rate above your competition by being
the business with information and service.
